Ford Motor Rouge Plant, Detroit News, 1924. In 1918, Ed Levy and Henry Ford began doing business on a simple handshake. Ford's new Rouge Plant was the site of heavy steel production. Tons of slag, an iron and steel making byproduct, were trucked away by Levy. Soon, Levy began crushing slag and marketing it as a road base material, an innovation ahead of its time.
