Celebrating Women in STEM

Celebrating Women in STEM: Meet the Scientists at Levy Technical Laboratories

In 2015, the United Nations designated February 11th as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, recognizing the invaluable contributions of women to the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Since then, this day has served as a global platform to celebrate and encourage the participation of women and girls in STEM disciplines. At Levy Technical Laboratories, we are proud to honor this day by highlighting the remarkable achievements of our women scientists who play integral roles in advancing scientific knowledge and innovation.

Kelly Cook: Director of Technical Marketing

Kelly Cook, Director of Technical Marketing and Levy Technical Laboratories, embodies the spirit of curiosity and passion for science that drives innovation. Kelly’s journey at Levy began as a chemist, where she quickly showcased her leadership abilities, eventually assuming the role of lab supervisor before transitioning to her current position. Reflecting on her childhood, Kelly recalls being encouraged by her parents to pursue her interests in STEM. From conducting water chemistry experiments to nurturing a fascination with genetics, Kelly’s journey was fueled by her innate curiosity and love for learning.

“Science has always been everywhere for me, and I not only understood it but I loved learning about it,” Kelly shares. Her academic journey led her to Purdue University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. Today, as a mother of four girls, Kelly is dedicated to inspiring the next generation of women to pursue careers in STEM, empowering them to dream big and reach for the stars.

Jessica Lyza: Chemist

Another trailblazing scientist at Levy is Jessica Lyza, a dedicated chemist with a passion for discovery. Jessica’s affinity for STEM was nurtured from an early age by her parents, who instilled in her a love for science and math. Family trips to synchrotrons sparked Jessica’s curiosity, igniting a lifelong fascination with scientific exploration. Her annual visits to space camp further fueled her enthusiasm for science, providing hands-on experiences that laid the foundation for her academic pursuits.

“Science has always been a part of my life,” Jessica affirms. Her academic journey has been characterized by relentless determination, culminating in a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and ongoing doctoral studies in Materials Science and Engineering. Jessica’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of scientific knowledge is evident in her work at Levy, where she continues to make meaningful contributions to the field.

At Levy Technical Laboratories, we recognize the importance of fostering a diverse and inclusive STEM workforce. The achievements of Kelly Cook, Jessica Lyza, and countless other women in STEM serve as a testament to the limitless potential of female scientists. As we celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, let us reaffirm our commitment to supporting and empowering women in their pursuit of excellence in STEM disciplines.

Join us in honoring the achievements of women in STEM today and every day. Together, we can inspire the next generation of female scientists to dream, explore, and transform the world through science.
