Teaching Beyond the Job: Levy & Junior Achievement

Levy employees recently spent the day at Harms Elementary in Detroit as part of “JA in a Day” through Junior Achievement, bringing hands-on lessons into local classrooms about money, work, and how local economies function. The program gives students a chance to connect what they’re learning in school to the real world around them. In Detroit, those lessons naturally tie to the automotive industry, infrastructure, and the materials that keep communities moving forward.

At Levy, we value showing up in the communities in which we operate. Employees regularly take part in local initiatives because there’s a shared belief in investing time, not just resources, into the next generation. Don Liepa, group controller for the asphalt division at Levy has been volunteering with Junior Achievement for more than 27 years. He even used to participate in his daughter’s classroom when she was in school. This year, the experience brought them together once again. His daughter, Nicky, now works at Levy and the two volunteered side by side in the same program he’s supported for decades.

“I grew up eating lunch in the Levy café with my dad, so this feels really full circle,” said Nicky. “It’s really meaningful to take part in experiences like these with my dad, now just on the other side. It’s also meaningful to me that the company I work for believes in community and puts their  values into action.”

Volunteer opportunities like JA in a Day reflect a broader commitment for us: building relationships in the community and helping students see how the world around them is built – and how they can one day help build it too. Giving back isn’t separate from what we do, it’s part of our footprint.
